Uninsured motorist coverage, on your policy is labeled UM/SUM. UM Stands for uninsured motorist protection & SUM stands for supplemental underinsured motorist protection. This is the only part of your policy that actually really protects you as the policy holder. So I would recommend that you purchase it and you wanna have the highest limit possible for this type of coverage. If you’re applying for the part of the policy that stands for that’s when the car that caused the accident, that either hit you or caused the accident, has no insurance. It’s either stolen or is unregistered and they have no insurance. That uninsured motorist would protect you and you’d be able to go after your own policy to get money for your pain and suffering. And supplemental underinsured motorist protection, SUM coverage, protects you for the difference. One of the things that, a lot of people don’t realize is that often brokers will recommend that you have higher bodily injury limits and a lower SUM coverage. But you’re entitled by law that whatever your bodily injury limits are, which is whatever the limits are that if you hit somebody else or you cause an accident, Whatever those limits are, you’re entitled to have equal SUM Limits. So my recommendation is is that no matter what, at a bare minimum, you make sure that your SUM limits, your slash SUM limits, at a bare minimum match your liability limits.
